Federal officials are saying that 4,700 pounds of mail bound for U.S. forces in Afghanistan – including absentee ballots – were likely destroyed in an Oct. 19 transport crash.

The crash reportedly occurred at Shindand Air Base located in southwest Afghanistan less than 75 miles from the Iranian border. The type of aircraft was not identified.

According to an Associated Press account, election officials across the nation have been notified of the potential loss of ballots and encouraged to resend voting documents to affected troops. How the states would be able to resend, receive and process the ballots in a timely fashion for the Nov. 6 election was not defined.
