On September 6th, forestry teams from Houston County 4-H competed in Forestry Field Day (FFD). Participants enrolled in this competitive event learn to identify trees, insects and diseases.

They also participate in compass and pacing activities and learn how to complete saw-timber volume estimations. FFD is designed to test and recognize the culmination of knowledge gained by 4-H Forestry Teams.

From Houston County, the Senior team, including members Ana Jakes, Micah Jakes, and Charlon Cochran placed 3rd. While the Junior team, consisting of Daniel Bodien, David Jakes, and Carson Purcel, placed 4th in the competition. Huston County Teams were coached by 4-H Staff Stacey Ellison and Kayleigh Sullivan, and volunteer Windy Williford.

The event was held at Arbor Gen in Shellman, Georgia. Arbor Gen is a commercial forestry industry site which works to develop genetically modified tree seedlings that yield higher wood output and have greater survival rates. Arbor Gen aims to meet the world’s growing dependence on trees as a resource for various products, ranging from paper to chewing gum, while trying to conserve trees as a natural resource for the environment.

The 4-H Forestry Field Day and Forrest Team educates youth about the forestry industry as well as the importance of the forest in the world’s ecosystem. Visits to forestry industry sites, such as Arbor Gen, allows 4-H’ers first-hand experience in understanding the challenge to meet the growing demand for tree-related products. Also, such forestry events highlight the importance of this industry to Georgia’s economy and labor force.

Houston County 4-H is proud to play a central role in educating Houston County youth. Our organization welcomes new members interested in activities such as forestry competitions.
