Over 27,000 students were enrolled in Houston County schools last school year... about 10% of these students are a dependent of an active duty military member. Two of these children are Jaylen and Kennedy, students at Huntington Middle School. In order to better provide for Jaylen and Kennedy the Houston County Board of Education is teaming up with Robins Air Force Base to host the 2nd annual Georgia Military Child Education Conference next week.

A military child usually attends between six to nine different school systems from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Robin Hines adds further education on the Interstate Compact and Common Core Education Standards will help these children stay on track with their schooling. The Conference won't only focus on academic obstacle this these children face. Kennedy says one of the hardest parts of moving is having to say good-bye to her friends.

Another emotional hardship these children can face is missing their parent when he or she is deployed. Jaylen says he has been able to find resources in the school to help through those tough times.

Ultimately, the goal of the conference is to provide anyone who works with military children on a regular basis the resources they need to make the academic and social experiences of these children as pleasant as possible.
