The Robins Air Force Base POW/MIA chapter will hold its annual remembrance ceremony Sept. 20 at the Museum of Aviation's Hangar One beginning at 3 p.m.

The event will feature comments by J.D. Lankford, author of "Walk With Me." Lankford was captured and held prisoner by the Germans during World War II following the fabled Battle of the Bulge. Lankford,a U.S. Army veteran, also served during the Korean War.

Dave Cowles, currently the treasurer for the local POW/MIA group, said the event continues to be important since hundreds of American military members remain missing in action.

"People need to realize that we are still finding MIA remains almost every day," Cowles said Thursday, "and those efforts need to continue. We're not like other nations. We value bringing peace and closure to the families of those still missing."

Cowles said the actual national POW/MIA Remembrance Day is Friday, Sept. 21.

"But we wanted to hold ours the day before," he said. "That gives people the chance to attend other POW/MIA events if they want to."

The local chapter has been one of the most active in the state and nation including the raising of $120,000 to erect a POW/MIA memorial at the local museum.
