For about two hours Tuesday afternoon, the main thoroughfares at Robins Air Force Base were turned into parking lots.

Christine Miner, Robins spokesperson, said the gates were closed to out-going traffic about 2 p.m. following report of an unauthorized pickup of a child at the Child Development Center on base.

"Base security forces implemented standard precautionary measures by closing the gates, conducting vehicle inspections and contacting local authorities," Miner indicated.

The hundreds of vehicles confined to the base were allowed to begin exiting about 4 p.m., although the case remains under investigation, she added. The incident occurred during a major transition point particularly as day-shift workers from the huge maintenance complex are departing for home.

The identity of the child was not released.
