Granted he knew it was a risk going in but one he said was worth taking. On the one hand, the Warhawks could be embarrassed. On the other they could win. And in between they could gain some valuable experience against a good team.
“In between” it is then as Warner Robins beat Veterans 29-0 Friday in McConnell-Talbert stadium.
Deanthony Mack got the scoring started with a 40-yard run on the left side. The point after failed so with 9:08 showing, the Demons were up 6-0.
Both punted – Veterans also went three-and-out and punted on the first possession fo the game - before the Warhawks went from their own 42 to the 24 of Warner Robins in two plays. The big gainer was a pass to Malik Broughton with a facemask penalty tacked on.
Two plays later found Logan Byrd coming up short on a fourth-and-one.
The first ended with the Demons driving but they ran out of gas as the clock ran out. Veterans punted on its next possession. D.D. Wright had a 49-yard run negated on Warner Robins’ next possession by a hold and the Warhawks punted again.
Wright scored from four yards to cap the possession following. The Demons started on their own 40 and went 11 plays. Matt Monday hit the PAT and just before the half ended also hit a 23-yard field goal. It was 16-0 at that point.
Warner Robins had 229 yards of total offense at that point and Veterans had 62 – minus 12 on the ground.
Rod Harris gave the Demons good field position – on the Warhawks’ 40 - with a good return to start the third. Two plays later Danny Hite Jr. broke free and would have scored had he not run out of his legs. He did have a bit of consolation as Veterans was flagged for a late hit after he had fallen on his own. That put the ball on the 8. Two plays netted nothing. Monday came on and hit his second 23 yarder.
With just under two minutes to play in the third, Reggie Woods scrambled for a 55-yard touchdown and then just as the third was coming to a close Monday split the uprights with a 27 yarder.
The fourth was really just a battle for field position, with some new faces and some fresh legs on both sides seeing some action.
