After a rainout at the Softball in the Swamp tournament – apparently it really was a swamp – this past weekend and a rainout against what was to be a visiting Peach County squad Tuesday, Northside finally got in its first action of the softball season Wednesday.

Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles it was a 10-6 loss at Rutland. It was close until the sixth, Northside Head Coach Blake Cannady said, and then the Lady Canes scored seven to “bust the game open.”

The Lady Eagles did put 14 hits on the board two each from Charitee Swift, Brittani Babbit, Callie Bookout, McKay Wynn, Kerigan Hicks and Taylor Sheffield. Swift also had two RBIs.

“(I was) very pleased with our offensive execution one through nine in our order,” Cannady said. “(We) just didn’t take care of the ball defensively and let one slip away from us late.

“We struggled with doing the small things right late in the ball game and it ultimately cost us.

Elsewhere, Veterans was also in action Wednesday and earned its first win. The Lady Warhawks beat First Presbyterian Day on the road, 11-0 in five innings.
