For an inning it looked like West Virginia came ready to get its first win of the Southeastern Region tournament.

For an inning. After Florida had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the Consolation matchup, West Virginia answered immediately with three of its own - uncharacteristically it has to be added.

Unfortunately for its fans, Florida struck for two more in the second. West Virginia did cut it to 5-4 with a run in the third but Florida broke free in the fourth with eight runs. It added one more in the fifth. West Virginia scored two in the bottom of that inning and went on to lose 14-6.

It was out-hit a whopping 22-4.

Tate Whatley was one of the offensive stars for the Plant City Little League team. He went 4-5 – one of those a homerun - with four RBIs. He also scored four runs. He finished the tournament with four homeruns and 11 RBIs, which has him currently at the top of the leader board in both categories.

Christian Laird also went 3-5 with two runs scored and Cody Ginther went 3-4 with a run driven in and two runs scored.

Nathanael Thompson on had one hit in three attempts but that was good enough for both of West Virginia’s RBIs.

Florida used six pitchers in the game and West Virginia four.

Emilio Rivera was the second of those for Florida and earned the win. He worked an inning. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out one.

South Carolina had this going for it: It scored at least one run in every inning of its Consolation game against Alabama. One run was scored in the first. One was scored in the second. One was scored in the third. Three were scored in the fourth and one was scored in the fifth and sixth.

Alabama put goose eggs up twice. The problem was it got most of its in one bunch: the second inning in which it scored seven. Those seven coupled with one in the first and two in the third were enough to leave Alabama the victor, 10-8.

It did out-hit South Carolina 12-6, while both made two errors.

Reid Whitaker, Clay Golson and Jackson Reynolds each had two each of Alabama’s hits. Whitaker was 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Golson was also 2-4 with one run scored and one driven in while Reynolds was 2-2 with a run scored.

Jacquez Geter had two hits to lead South Carolina. He was 2-3, one of which was a homerun, and drove in four. He also scored three times. He finished the tournament hitting .727, which currently leads all players.

Wes Starr got the win for Alabama and finished the tournament 2-0. He worked four innings, gave up six hits and seven runs – only three earned. He walked two and struck out two.
