The Houston County School Board is considering installing cameras on the stop sign arms of school buses in order to deter illegal and dangerous passing. The cameras would take video and photos of cars which illegally pass the school bus... these would be reported to the Sheriff's Office and citations would be issued. The cameras would come at no cost to the school system... American Transportation Solutions would provide and install the cameras for free, and be reimbursed with a certain percentage of the funds collected from the citations annually until the cameras are paid for. According to Tom Walmer, School Board Chairman, these cameras would solve a safety issue. Walmer adds, five other counties in the state have already approved the installation of these bus cameras, and Houston County would be at the front end of this initiative. The School Board decided not to vote on the issue at today's meeting and will make a decision at next month's meeting once more details are available.
