Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger, commander of Air Force Materiel Command, will officiate the 10 a.m. session at the Century of Flight Hangar. Col. Evan Miller, commander of the 402nd Maintenance Wing at Robins and acting commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center since the June 15 retirement of Maj. Gen. Bob McMahon, will relinquish command. Miller will become the deputy director of Logistics for AFMC at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
The move is part of AFMC restructuring announced last November that reduces centers in the command from 12 to 5, cuts manpower by more than 1,000 and promises annual savings of $109 million. Robins lost 193 positions in the move as air logistics center and aerospace sustainment directorate staffs were eliminated along with the center’s two-star, major general slot. Similar restructuring occurred at the two other air logistics centers in Oklahoma and Utah.
George will assume command of what has been the 402nd Maintenance Wing under the old air logistics center construct. In that role, he will lead more than 8,400 mostly civilian workers in providing programmed depot maintenance for the Air Force fleet of F-15s, C-5s, C-130s, C-17s and special operations forces aircraft. The portfolio also includes component repair, manufacture and modification; avionics and airborne electronics repair and modification as well as software development and sustainment for a host of components and weapon systems.
Under the new alignment, George and Col. Mitch Butikofer, the 78th Air Base Wing commander at Robins, will separately report to the new Air Force Sustainment Center at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. The new sustainment center was activated July 12 with Lt. Gen. Bruce Litchfield as its commander. In turn, the weapon system program managers on base will report to a newly established Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright-Patterson AFB.
George holds a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Norwich University and a master’s in management from Troy State University. He entered active duty in January of 1988 and has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility. He comes to Robins from Tinker AFB where he was commander of the 76th Maintenance Wing.
