In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's recent striking down of the Stolen Valor Act, both the Pentagon and Congress are working initiatives to curb false claims of military heroism.

The Defense Department said last week that it would establish a data base to substantiate claims of military decorations.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little, according to an Air Force Association account, said the data base would "go as far back as possible." He also noted that identifying which decorations to include is being decided. When the data base might be up and running and how it will be accessed were not revealed.

In Congress, Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass, and Rep. Joe Heck, R-Nev., are sponsoring stolen valor legislation that will focus on punishing those who benefit from false claims. The new bill seeks to skirt the Supreme Court's finding that the 2006 Stolen Valor Act restricted free speech.
