The Funeral service will be at Southside Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday August 13th. The graveside service will follow at Parkway Memorial Gardens.
Downer was in Kandahar Province Friday when insurgents attacked his unit with rocket propelled grenades.
Downer was a combat medic who joined the army in December 2009 and was stationed in Fort Drum NY. He deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in March.
Downer was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, part of the 10th Mountain Division.
Downer was the recipient of several awards and decorations including the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
He is survived by a child and his mother and father.
