Another drug dealer put away by the Houston County legal system. Two years ago Donnell Hawkins was pulled from a car at a local traffic roadblock when police found a major stash of marijuana, Ecstasy tablets, and powder and crack cocaine. That’s all it took for a jury to find him guilty of possession with intent to distribute, and Superior Court Judge George Nunn to ordered the 30 year old to 40 years, 18 without parole.
This week former Warner Robins City Councilman John Williams finally got some good legal news for a change. It seems Houston County Superior Court Judge Ed Lukemire has dropped charges against Williams based on allegations that he lied to local authorities about a missing municipal cell phone. Williams already in jail on federal charges relating to his trying to hush up an attempted vehicle sale to the city gone wrong.
Employment numbers were released yesterday for June, and Warner Robins was headed in the wrong direction. The area lost six hundred jobs last month – that number provided by the Georgia Department of Labor. In all, employment fell from 59,600 a year ago, a decline of one percent. The local labor market actually goes against state trends, as Georgia overall posted a 1.2 percent increase in employment. As for the Macon metro area, positive news there as well, with 1800 jobs added to the workforce.
Over 100 businesses, universities, and government agencies on hand for a big job fair yesterday. The event at the Georgia National Fairgrounds pulled a huge number of job seekers – nearly 850 were already in line when the doors opened at 10. By the end of the event at 3 some 1800 applicants had put in resumes. It was all sponsored by the Georgia Department of Labor, the Houston County Career Center, and the Middle Georgia Employer Committee.
It’s an annual showcase of community cooperation and philanthropy. The 2012 version of the Back to School Bash taking place today at Union Grove Baptist Church on South Davis Drive. The event, hosted by the Warner Robins Housing Authority, puts school supplies in the hands of thousands of children who need them most. Over two dozen local non-profit and government agencies will be on hand to help, and its all absolutely free. It runs until noon.
He was found in a coma last Saturday on the sidewalk of Vineville Avenue, bleeding from his face and head. Now Albert Jelks is dead – he passed away yesterday at the Medical Center of Central Georgia never regaining consciousness. Investigators say his death was caused by blows from a blunt object; they’re treating the case as a possible homicide.
A Bibb County drug dealer will be paying for his crimes. Jerman Tucker pled guilty yesterday to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. He was sentenced to 15 years and a $10,000 fine. Police discovered some 400 grams of cocaine during a search of his Macon home last year.
