The non-profit organization uses the donated hair to create high quality wigs for the children.
The event began in honor of Joanna McAfee who died of childhood cancer in 2005.
Whitney Sloan a 8 year old student said, "I met a friend at the beach who had cancer and I wanted to do this in honor of her." Sloan has been growing her hair out for two years.
According to Jeff McAfee, Joanna's father, at least 60 families in Houston County have benefited from the wigs.
McAfee said, "At our first fund raiser we raised $200, we have now raised up to three quarters of a million dollars."
"It is students making a difference by sacrificing their hair. It is a sacrifice," said Warner Robins High School teacher, Randi Collier.
A poem in the Joanna Mcafee brochure states, "A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam and for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world...but then it flies on again, and though we wish it could have stayed, we feel so lucky to have seen it".
