Veterans rolls past Baldwin; Perry shuts out West Laurens; NS, WR fall

Veterans High got off to a slow start defensively in its Region 2-AAAA season opener Tuesday – that against Baldwin at home - but recovered nicely enough. The Lady Warhawks went on to win 18-3 in three innings.

All three of the Lady Braves’ runs came in the first inning. The first batter singled. The second reached on an error and the third walked to set the stage.

Veterans answered by batting around and paced by Katlyn Winner’s two-run triple answered with eight.

Baldwin left the bases loaded in the second and the Lady Warhawks pushed seven more across in the bottom of the inning. Their final three came in the third.

Winner finished up 2-3 with two runs scored and two driven in. She also walked and was one of four Veterans players to record two hits. Veterans out-hit Baldwin 10-4. Avery Lamb went 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Peyton Stallworth was 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored and Ashley Killebrew was 2-2 with three driven in and two scored. Lakinya Green was hitless – she also had a walk - but drove in two.

Kelsey Fowler worked all three innings for the win. She walked one and struck out three.

Veterans is now 6-2 overall.

Elsewhere, Perry beat West Laurens on the road 3-0 to open its Region 2-AAAA slate with a win. The Lady Panthers are 7-6 overall.

Warner Robins continues to look for its first win under new Head Coach Phillip Vance. The Demonettes - now 0-7 - were no-hit by Dublin's R. Sumner and fell 17-0 in three innings.

Northside also lost, 6-0, at Northside-Columbus. The Lady Eagles in turn fell to 2-7-1 overall.
