Ellie Williams was close friends with the Lucas family, whose son Kody passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer. Kody's experiences with cancer, along with Ellie learning how to sew, led her to start a campaign to make teddy bears for kids with cancer. And these aren't just any teddy bears... they are specially made for each childhood cancer patient by either using their favorite shirt as fabric, or a monogram of their name.
Simplicity Creative Group has donated patterns for the teddy bears, and Initial Reaction in Perry is providing the monogramming on the bears at no charge. Ellie says the biggest help she needs is man-power, because it takes about eight hours to make each bear.
She adds even though she doesn't get the opportunity to deliver every bear, or meet every child she builds a bear for, that's not what it's all about.
