Teams from high schools throughout the Southeast -- including a Houston County alliance unit -- will compete at the Museum of Aviation Saturday in the fourth annual GeorgiaFIRST Robotics Invitational Tournament and Showcase or GRITS.

The museum's Starbase Robins will host the day-long event as teams compete in the game of "roundball rumble." Two alliances of three teams compete against each other on a 27 by 54-foot field directing their robots to shoot basketballs into their respective goals.

Each high school team designed, built and programmed their robot for the competition. The robots weigh up to 120 pounds and can be 60 inches tall.

The event is free and open to the public. Qualifying rounds begin at 9:30 a.m. with award presentations expected at 5:15.

For spectators, there will also be a showcase area featuring Lego Leagues for ages 9 to 13 and First Tech Challenge for upper middle and high school students. Members of the Georgia Tech Robojackets will also be demonstrating their robotics program.
