Bonaire Elementary honored
Bonaire Elementary School was honored as a 2009 Georgia School of Excellence in Student Achievement at a banquet held by the Georgia Department of Education in February. State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox presented Principal Eric Payne an award.
Bonaire Elementary was one of 27 Schools of Excellence chosen from each Congressional District for showing the greatest improvement or highest achievement across the state. “This award validates the vision, commitment and expectations we have for all of our students,” said Payne.
Northside Middle wins Jimmy Carter Historical Site Academic Bowl
Northside Middle School won the 2010 Jimmy Carter National Historical Site Academic Bowl last month in Plains. The students competed against seven teams from other middle schools at the Plains High School Museum. Houston County’s Mossy Creek Middle School won second place.
The eight teams competed in rounds by answering 20 questions in the categories of history, geography and economics. Teachers Kelly Munn and Melissa Shiver accompanied the team.
“This win was very special for us,” said Munn. “Several of our eighth graders have been on our academic team since they were sixth graders, and it was nice to see them get a win for their last middle school competition.”

Warner Robins Center library
receives book donation
When the Bioenvironmental Engineering Services office at Robins Air Force Base needed to do some housecleaning, Fort Valley State University adjunct professor David Trotter scooped up some useful texts for his students in the Master of Public Health program.
Trotter, an industrial hygienist in the office, brought a set of industrial hygiene textbooks to the Warner Robins Center library, the resource center used by Fort Valley State University graduate students. Col. Stephen Novak offered the books to his staff.
“These are good reference books that will be useful for the Master of Public Health students in a number of the courses in the MPH Program,” said Trotter.
Trotter’s donation follows a large donation in of public health texts from professor William Zimmerli in July.
"The industrial hygiene books are a wonderful compliment to Hunt Library's collections,” said Annie Payton, director of the FVSU library. “I am certain the students will find them most helpful in their research efforts.”

School system marks board
appreciation week
The Houston County School System is celebrating School Board Appreciation Week this week to salute the contribution of the Houston County Board of Education members.
The Houston County Board of Education is comprised of seven members elected to four-year terms. Five members are elected to represent their voting district, and two are elected at-large.
Board members are Tom Walmer, Post 1, chairman; Charles “Toby” Hill, Post 7, vice chairman; Marianne Melnick, Post 2; Gilis “Skip” Dawkins, Post 3; Fred Wilson, Post 4; Helen Hughes, Post 5; and Griff Clements, Post 6.
As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members set educational policies, employ school personnel, provide buildings and equipment, operate a transportation system and disburse school funds.
As community leaders, school board members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.
