In a base press release, base officials said the stately building would become the Horizons Event Center open for meetings only. The announcement said the facility will be expanded over the next several weeks to support conferences and events catered by on-base food service outlets and eventually by off-base vendors.
Evening food service and week-day lunches had been discontinued for several weeks.
Col. Mitchel Butikofer, installation commander, said restoring the club's kitchen would be too costly and impractical.
"Doing so would result in an unfavorable return on investment as well as unnecessary risk to the installation's overall morale, welfare and recreation fund," Butikofer is quoted in the press release. "While this is a difficult decision, I believe it to be the best one for our airmen and their families."
The barber shop located in the Horizons will continue to operate, officials said.
