For 36 years, the GSGA Foundation has supported hundreds of scholars and has surpassed the $2 million mark in cumulative financial assistance to deserving students.
The Yates Scholarship Program, which provides college funds to GSGA member club employees and their dependents, granted $165,800 to 26 new scholars and 44 renewing scholars for the 2012-2013 school year. The scholarships are awarded annually based on academic achievement, financial need, character and work experience at a GSGA Member Club. They are renewable up through a student’s fourth year of college. Now in its 25th year, the Yates program has supported more than 310 scholars during that span.
The program is named for Charles, Dan and Danny Yates of Atlanta, all of whom have contributed greatly to the game of golf. All GSGA Member Club employees and their dependents are eligible to apply. Applications for the 2013-2014 school year can be found at either www.gsgafoundation.org or www.gsga.org, and are being accepted through March 1, 2013.
Georgia’s most promising future superintendents are also supported by the GSGA Foundation, through the James B. “Monty” Moncrief Scholarship Program. The Moncrief Scholarships honor deserving students in the field of agronomy and turf management at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia based on academic achievement, character and financial need. The scholarships are renewable up through a student’s fourth year of college. Nine students from ABAC and five from UGA received scholarships totaling $25,500 for the 2012-2013 school year.
The program is in its 36th year and has granted more than $355,000 to more than 270 Moncrief Scholars in that time. This program is also supported by the Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association. The scholarship is named in memory of Moncrief, a former Southeastern Green Section Director for the United States Golf Association.
The GSGA Foundation is the charitable affiliate of the Georgia State Golf Association. Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with nearly 350 member clubs and 75,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. In addition to the Foundation’s scholarship programs, other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and management of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame.
