Two Eagle Springs Elementary School students, Scott Akin and Jared Meck, won first place at the Southwest Georgia Regional Social Studies Fair. The competition was held Feb. 25, 2012, at the Columbus Museum. Scott and Jared now advance to the State Social Studies Fair which will be March 24, 2012, at Clayton State.

Scott’s project is titled, “Up In the Air” and Jared’s project is titled, “Was the United States Justified for Forcing Japanese-Americans Into Internment Camps?” Twenty-seven students from the Southwest Region in grades 5-12 competed at the regional fair after placing first at their respective district fairs.

Students in grades five through twelve may enter the fair. They select a topic that falls into one of six disciplines: anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science or sociology/psychology. Projects are visual and verbal presentations designed to show research and conclusions about the study of people and their relationships to their physical and social environment.
