Officials at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., celebrated the 40th anniversary of the first flight of the F-15 Eagle on July 27.

The 1972 date marked the first flight of the F-15A. The two-seater F-15B's first flight was recorded a year later in July 1973.

Robins Air Force Base is the Air Force focal point for the twin-engine jet fighter.

According to an Edwards AFB press release, the first F-15B was delivered to the Air Force in November 1974.

The F-15 is one of the most successful fighters ever built, the Edwards announcement noted, with 104 aerial combat victories and no losses. More than 1,600 F-15s have been built.

The single-seat F-15C and the two-seat F-15D entered the Air Force inventory beginning in 1979
