The incident was reported Monday in an Air Force Mobility Command press release. MacDill is located about four miles from the Tampa airport.
The aircraft was flying in support of U.S. Central Command, the release noted. The Boeing transport was undamaged and no injuries were reported.
"There appears to be no damage to the airfield," the AMC statement indicated. "In concert with airfield officials, the Air Force is planning to move the aircraft to allow Peter O. Knight airport to reopen."
The incident is under investigation, AMC reported.
Robins Air Force Base is the Air Force focal point for the C-17 cargo aircraft.
