U.S. Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., came out against defense cuts announced by the Obama administration Thursday, saying the President is "out of touch with what Americans want and with current threats around the world."

He especially objected to an additional round of Base Realignment and Closure and promised to "protect Robins Air Force Base every step of the way."

"I will be at every committee meeting and will work with Gen. (Bob) McMahon as well as members of the 21st Century Partnership to protect Robins from any BRAC reductions," Scott said in a statement released late Thursday afternoon.

McMahon is commander of the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, the host agency for Robins. The 21st Century Partnership consists of local business, civic and political leaders focused on supporting Robins and its assigned units.

"I am confident," Scott added, "that our entire Robins community will work together to ensure Robins remains an integral part of Georgia's economy and our national defense for a long time."

The 8th District representative said Obama's defense cuts would put as many as 100,000 military members in the unemployment line and would have "serious and long-term impact" on the economy and the nation's security.

"While the president continues to insist on cutting funding for the men and women who protect our personal freedoms, he is ignoring the root of our economic problems: entitlement spending," Scott said. "I intend to fight his decision every step of the way."
