Military members stationed in Afghanistan will run Museum of Aviation Foundation “shadow” marathon and half marathon races January 15 along with those running the annual races at the Museum in Warner Robins. A total of 272 runners will run their races at Kandahar, Afghanistan as part of the 2011 Museum of Aviation Foundation Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K Run/Walk on Robins Air Force Base, Georgia.

“The idea was proposed by Navy Command Master Chief Donald “Lee” True who ran the marathon at Robins Air Force this year and is currently deployed to Afghanistan,” said Pat Bartness, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Museum of Aviation Foundation. “We’re sending shirts and trophies to him and our shirt design this year reflects both locations.”

Master Chief True is a Hospital Corpsman from Virginia Beach, Virginia and is now stationed at the NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit in Kandahar. He is an avid runner who has completed 24 marathons and won the top active duty male runner trophy in the 2010 Museum Foundation Marathon. He has completed 12 more marathons in the past 12 months.

More than 1,000 runners and walkers are expected to run in the 15th Annual races at the Museum of Aviation on Saturday, January 15, 2011. The Marathon and Half Marathon will start at 8:00 am. and the 5K will begin at 8:15 am. Fees are $45 for the Marathon, $35 for the Half Marathon and $20 for the 5K. A $5 surcharge is assessed for registrations after January 8th.

Cash prizes are $250 to the male and female first place winners in each race; $150 for second place; and $100 for third place. Trophies go to the top three male and female finishers in each race, the top three male and female masters in each race, the top active duty military male and female in the Marathon and the top three finishers in 14 different age categories. All marathon and half marathon finishers get medallions and all race participants will receive a long-sleeve shirt. Shirts are guaranteed on race day to all those who register by January 8.

Race packets may be picked up at the Museum of Aviation Century of Flight Hangar on race day only between 6:30 -7:30 a.m. A picture ID is required at registration/check-in. Award ceremonies will be held in the Museum’s Century of Flight Hangar at 9:30 a.m. for the 5K; 10:45 a.m. for the Half Marathon and 1:00 pm for the Marathon.
