SCHOOL: Lake Joy Elementary 4th grade
BACKGROUND:I grew up in Michigan. Graduated from Wesleyan College in 2005 and finished master’s degree last year at Walden University. I taught 2nd grade for 2 years at Quail Run Elementary and ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) at Lake Joy Elementary for 3 years. This is my first year teaching 4th grade.
WHY TEACHING?: This profession is so unique—we get to work with children and learn with them—I love learning. I never get bored because I am constantly learning new strategies and trying out new lessons. Part of my job is keeping students interested in education which means I am able to spend most of my day showing children that learning can be very enjoyable.
BEST PART OF TEACHING: I love making school fun!
MOST CHALLENGING PART OF TEACHING: There never seems to be enough time in the day. I always have too much planned.
IF NOT TEACHING, WHAT?: (ever consider another profession?) That’s a hard questions because I love what I do. I guess I would like to have my own kids’ camp where students learn about exercise and nutrition. I’d still be teaching though!
ADVICE TO STUDENTS: Never give up and do not listen to people that say “You can’t do that.”
ADVICE TO PARENTS: Support students every way you can.
HOME LIFE: I have been married for nine years. We have two “four-legged” children—our dogs, Tuffy and Julie. When I am not at school I enjoy volunteering in the preschool area at my church and spending time with my husband and friends. I completed my first triathlon last summer and am hooked, so I spend a great deal of time swimming, biking, and running.
